Bookings filling fast for library activities

The coloured sand sessions booked out on Friday so don't delay in booking for Monday's activity at the library.

PARENTS are urged to get on the phone this weekend and make a booking for Monday's Whyalla Public Library totem making activity after Friday's activity booked out.

totemBoth the morning and afternoon sessions of the Get Colour with Sand Art sessions booked out on Friday with more than 21 kids turning up for the afternoon time slot. This came hot on the heels of the Big Foot Malleefowl activities and information on Thursday which was lapped up by another big group of kids.

On Friday the kids had buckets-full of fun with the coloured sands as they filled teddies and made artwork with the bright sand.

On Thursday, to kick off malleefowl breeding season, the kids heard the story of the big foot ‘the incubator bird’ malleefowl and learned why saving what’s left of our mallee habitat is so important for the survival of nationally threatened species. They loved playing ‘the habitat game’ an adaptation of musical chairs that demonstrates what happens when there is no habitat left for malleefowl to live in.

The kids then created their own malleefowl habitat masterpieces with everything the malleefowl needs to survive and breed in glue-less collage. It’s was great to see the enthusiasm our young people have for learning about local native wildlife and we hope the kids heading off on camping trips these school holidays are lucky enough to spot a malleefowl in the wild.

Only 2 in 100 chicks survives to adulthood so we urge motorists to slow down when they see malleefowl signs along our roads so these amazing birds have a better chance of surviving and breeding a new generation of chicks this season.

So now, don't dely to book in for the Hanging Woven Totems art sessions on Monday, October 9 from 10.30am to 2pm.

Deb Hughes - the council's wonderful, fun-loving arts officer - will be taking the sessions. Anything involving Deb is bound to be upbeat, happy and full of energy.

Those booking in are advised to bring along a small item of interest that they can weave into their totems.

Phone the library during normal hours on the weekend on 8645 7891 to make your booking for Monday or next Thursday's Let's Get Loud drum-making activity.
