Council crews working hard to fix pool

The leak affecting the Whyalla Leisure Centre main pool has been located and work is continuing to get the pool back up and running.

City of Whyalla construction crews are in the process of fixing a leak affecting the main pool at the Whyalla Leisure Centre and are hopeful it will be open again in mid-January this year.

Council workers have spent considerable time over the past three months trying to locate the source of a leak near the main pool. The task has been made even harder by the fact the pool was built in the 1970s, with a redevelopment in 1998, and plans for its construction can’t be located.

The logistics of the operation have been massive with large sections of concrete needing to be worked around to find the source of the leak.

poolNow the leak has been found, it has become necessary to temporarily close the pool to put in place a permanent solution to the problem.

“These construction crews have done an amazing job to track down this leak after many hours of hard work,” City of Whyalla CEO Chris Cowley said.

“They were literally working blind and looking for a needle in a haystack under a tonne of concrete.”

Two different swimming contractors were brought in to provide advice along with officers for SA Water. Now the leak has been located, council is investigating the best way to bypass the damaged section of pipe and get the pool back up and running.

“It is unfortunate the pool will be out of action at this time of the year but it is necessary to fix this problem and make sure the pool is safe and ready for use for the rest of the summer,” Mr Cowley said.

The leisure centre has advised that it is operation-as-normal for all other areas of the centre. The leisure, toddler and spa pools are still open and all regular activities such as gym, squash, group fitness and the children’s play café are running as normal.

Extra slide times have also been organised. The water slide is open from 11am to 2pm on Thursday and Friday (January 11 and 12) and 11am-3pm on Saturday and Sunday (January 13 and 14). Check with the centre for next week’s times on 8645 5488.
