The new jetty will, however, be built regardless of any extra funding

City of Whyalla CEO Chris Cowley has welcomed a $2.5m pledge from SA-BEST for the new Whyalla jetty and called on other political parties to match the commitment.

SA-BEST announced on Tuesday that, if elected at the March 17 State Election, it would commit to an additional $2.5m in State Government funds for the new jetty in Whyalla. SA-BEST candidate for Giles, Tom Antonio conveyed this promise to Council during a meeting with Mr Cowley this week.

sabestThe City of Whyalla is currently managing the new jetty project which is at the design stage and has funding of $1m already approved by the present State Government. Council has budgeted to match the State Government commitment, and beyond, while aiming for a completion date in December this year.

The SA-BEST $2.5m commitment would be an addition to $1m already approved and would mean the jetty could be 100% State Government funded.

Mr Cowley said the SA-BEST pledge was a positive announcement for the city but as it was reliant on SA-BEST being elected, Council would like to see the same commitment made by other key political parties in South Australia.

“This is great news and something Council would obviously welcome when it comes to the final funding arrangements for the new jetty,” Mr Cowley said.

“What we would request right now, as a Council, is for the other major players in the State Election to back this commitment up and make the same pledge. A fully-funded jetty courtesy of the State Government would be a huge win for Whyalla.

“This jetty is, however, already well down the track to being built and is not reliant on this $2.5m pledge.

“It would be fantastic to get another $2.5m but we’d like to assure the Whyalla community that this jetty is being designed right now with construction estimated to start in the next few months regardless.”

Design drawings and a rough order cost estimate were received from the appointed design consultants, Magryn & Associates, on the scheduled date of March 2 this year. These will now be tabled for consideration at the next general Council meeting on March 19 with construction expected to begin in the next couple of months.
